Illusion of permanence
Illusion of Permanence is an immersive installation that explores the tension between stability and change through mixed-media settings. Presented at Thames-Side Studios Gallery in January 2018, the exhibition challenges established notions of function, structure, and conformity using ambiguity, contradiction, and imperfection.
The settings blur familiar objects and architectural elements, combining abstract and literal recordings from the city to create a sense of disorientation. Contradictory elements—such as blending soothing natural sounds with harsh urban noise—highlight the transient, often conflicting nature of urban life. Imperfections are embraced, revealing the beauty within flaws and the constant state of flux in supposedly stable environments.
The installation’s soundscapes and moving-image compositions fuse ambient city recordings with manipulated visuals, creating an immersive, sensory experience. Illusion of Permanence ultimately invites viewers to question the illusion of permanence projected by urban spaces and societal norms, highlighting the beauty in change and uncertainty.
